There’s always something new in Social Media and online marketing.  Most changes are slight tweaks that don’t mean much.  Nonetheless, I thought I’d write a blog with some changes going on so that you remain current.


Business Pages got an update this month on Facebook.  The new layout, allows for the Cover Photo to be shown on its own without the profile picture covering it up.  This is a good opportunity for you to use that cover photo as a billboard for your company.   I recently made three of them and will be rotating them for the next few months.  Here’s a sample.

Facebook and Instagram

What’s new, is that Facebook bought Instagram awhile back.  And while they agree that many people use both platforms, they have discovered that people use them differently.   Both Facebook and Instagram are used to connect with friends and family, foremost.  But you will find that Facebook is more for empowerment and recognition, while Instagram is for more fun and exploration.   Keep these in mind when marketing in both places.

New on Instagram – Stories 

So you may have heard that Instagram has added Stories, to their feed.  These are pcitures and videos taken by you and saved to Stories, that are available to your friends and family for 24 hours and then they are gone.   What’s the big deal………This is one of the most popular uses for Snapchat.  One difference between stories on Snapchat and stories on Instagram is that Instagram’s news feed, like Facebook’s is always there.  Photos in the story will not populate the feed, unless you want them there.    Since snapchats are not saved in a feed, stories allow the pictures and videos to last just a little bit longer.

Google AMP

What is Google AMP?    AMP is Google’s answer to Instant Articles it stands for Accelerated Mobile Pages. Mostly what AMP is are one off pages that are optimized to load quickly and read easily on mobile.

I know what you are thinking, if you have a mobile ready website / blog / email template, you are good to go right?  KINDA.

What is different about AMP is that these stories will show up first in Google, as Google tries to give you the most updated information as fast as possible.   Well here, Google can explain it just watch this video.

The good news is that in addition to explaining what AMP is, they also include many tutorial pages and videos.   AMP is expected to ramp up this fall.  Check it out here:  AMP

Pokemon Go!

By now you’re aware that people all over are chasing Pokemons.  Did you know that you can encourage all those players to come into your business?  Here’s a blog I wrote for my client.  In it is an easy explanation of Pokemon Go and how to use it to lure customers.      Bocotek:  Lure Customers with Pokemon Go

Snapchat Geostickers

Available only in big cities, ( Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Washington DC, Honolulu, London, Sydney, São Paulo, Paris, and Riyadh),  Snapchat has stickers based on those cities that you can send in a chat or stick on a snap.  The stickers are bound to be popular, and will probably increase to more cities.  To use the stickers, you mush have your location service on / allow Snapchat to see your location.  More than just fun, this will undoubtedly give Snapchat more data to mine and ensure that location services are always turned on.

And if you are handy on Illustrator or Photoshop, you can make your own geosticker to be reviewed, approved and shared on Snapchat.  Want to use a geo sticker for your business?  They’re available for purchase.     Simply go to Snapchat and choose either to make one or purchase one.
